This might be appropriate for Throwback Thursday, and by throwback we mean way back. Today we look at the first ever Grey Cup Championship, played 105 years ago to this date on Dec. 4, 1909 in front of 3,807 fans at Toronto’s Rosedale Field.
The University of Toronto emerged victorious, tackling Parkdale 26-6 to win the inaugural Grey Cup, never once trailing in the game.
But despite being the heavy favourite, it was never easy for U of T. Varsity managed only a 6-5 lead after halftime, but a third-quarter major by Murray Thomson was enough to lift University of Toronto to the eventual win.
The win marked the first of three in a row for Varsity, until 1912 when the Hamilton Alerts topped the Toronto Argonauts.
