The story of the 1943 Grey Cup Champion Hamilton ‘Flying’ Wildcats
You may remember in 2013 the Hamilton Tiger-Cats wore a red uniform in September. It was a throwback uniform that was meant as a tribute to the 1943 Grey Cup Champion Hamilton Flying Wildcats. As luck would have it, that was the year I (Brodie Lawson) interned for the Tiger-Cats- why luck you ask? My grandfather Mel Lawson was a member of the 1943 team, the quarterback actually, and when I learned the Cats would be wearing the throwback uniform I pitched this story to my boss. What you see below was months of uncovering the story of the 1943 Grey Cup champs. Through newspaper articles, archives, and interviews I was led to the only surviving member of the team who I stayed in touch with long after I finished this story. I come back to this story around Remembrance Day each year and I am reminded of the strength and courage of generations past and am ever more grateful for those who are currently serving.
Today join our Nation in remembering those who have fought to keep this country, and others, strong and free and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
