When Was The First Intercollegiate Football Game? – 141 Years Ago Today!

It’s Thursday so what better time to throwback to the first ever Intercollegiate Football Game!

Brought to our attention by McGill University, today marks the 141st anniversary of the first intercollegiate football game.

According to McGill’s official website:

“The two-game series, played at Cambridge, Mass., May 14 and 15, 1874, were the first formal intercollegiate games of North American-style football.  These contests were preceded by a Princeton-Rutgers football game in 1869 but that event was actually played under England’s “Football Association” rules, better known in North America as soccer.”

The two game series featured two different play styles (one for each game) and drew over 500 spectators!
